March 10, 2009— --A new drug that can treat erectile dysfunction could lead to the death of a man who had the disease.
An FDA advisory panel voted 6-1 to recommend that the drug, called Viagra, be sold under the brand name and marketed as the drug's "Sildenafil."
The drug is an "intrinsic" drug that affects chemicals that cause erections, but is also known as the "little blue pill."
The agency's committee found that people who took Viagra and took a pill with the Sildenafil dose experienced an erection that lasted for more than four hours. This was not the first time the drug has been used to treat erectile dysfunction, but its use has not been tested in humans.
"It is very, very rare and very well known that this drug is not safe to use for sexual dysfunction," said Dr. Peter M. Stetzer, who was not involved in the study.
Viagra can also be prescribed off-label for conditions such as pulmonary arterial hypertension and high blood pressure.
Viagra may also be used to treat certain types of erectile dysfunction, such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and erectile dysfunction in men.
Sildenafil and Viagra are approved for use by the FDA in the United States.
About 4,500 men aged 50 to 64, who were taking Viagra, used the drug for up to five years.
The drug was found to be safe and effective when administered in volunteers, but patients taking a dose that exceeded the recommended dose of 50 milligrams per day, were found to have a 50 percent greater risk of developing erectile dysfunction than patients who didn't take the drug. The risks of taking more than 50 milligrams of Sildenafil per day, for example, were not considered in the committee's analysis.
Dr. Stetzer's advisory committee had recommended that Viagra be sold under the brand name. The drug has been available only to patients with diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease for years.
"It is very important that physicians prescribe this drug to patients with erectile dysfunction and that they be able to discuss their concerns about side effects with their patients," he said.
"These drugs are not safe or effective for the majority of patients with erectile dysfunction," Dr. Stetzer said. "The FDA has already recommended that this drug be sold under the brand name."
Stetzer also acknowledged that Viagra may be associated with serious side effects, including vision changes and hearing loss, and should be monitored for the potential occurrence of side effects.
However, he said the safety profile for Viagra was unknown to the FDA and, in some cases, has not been established in clinical trials.
The drug was first approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in 1998 and has since been shown to improve erectile function.
Viagra may also be used off-label for conditions such as pulmonary arterial hypertension and high blood pressure.
Viagra is not approved for use by the FDA and is not indicated for any other condition.
